The total number of births registered last year in
Paddington was absolutely the smallest registered in
any of the eleven years 1884-94. The only year with
a total at all approximating to that of last year was
1888 (2,843), when the estimated population was
114,462, compared with 121,500 for last year. The
true difference between these years is indicated by
the rates, 24.6 for 1888, and 23.3 for 1894.
The births registered were only 98 below the
average annual number for the ten years 1884-93, but
the birth-rate was 2.0 per 1,000 below the mean
rate. There has been a similar fall in the rate for
London (2.1 per 1,000), as will be seen by referring
