HOUSING OF THE POPULATION.
In 1891 the population of the Parish (117,846
persons) occupied 14,473 houses, giving an average of
of 8.1 persons per house. In the Sub-District of St.
Mary 84,159 persons occupied 9,420 houses (8.9 per
house), and in that of St. John 33,687 persons, 5,053
houses (6.6 per house). As the term "uninhabited"
is used in the Census Report in a different sense to
that of the Rate-books, it is impossible to give figures
for 1894 which shall be comparable.
In the whole Parish the total number of "tenements"
occupied in 1891 amounted to 27,201, of
which 9,993 contained five rooms or more, with a
population of 59,748. In the remaining 17,208
tenements, containing less than five rooms, there were
housed 58,098 individuals, equal to 49.30 percent, of the
