of micro-organisms, although not necessarily of
pathogenic significance.
Mr. Engineer reports that during 1898 10
additional shafts were fixed in front of adjacent
buildings to enable the sewer ventilating gratings
in roadways to be closed, thereby affording
considerable relief from nuisance to residents in
the vicinity.
We learn from the same source that 176
premises were newly drained; but to these must
be added a large number of drainage and other
sanitary improvements dealt with by my own
department, which relate only to the interior
of buildings.
Underground conveniences are now to be
found in 20 places in the City, containing 219
compartments as urinals, and 143 water-closets;
to which four more are now in course of
construction and four others contemplated.
The accommodation for women includes 28
water-closets, with lavatory appliances; and the
system will be extended as opportunities afford.
