In view of the conflict of opinion between
the Sanitary Committee and outside persons
anxious for the demolition of Montague Court,
the Sanitary Committee inspected the place, and
additional surveys were made with the following
results:—
1. On the 21st November, 1898, twelve
houses only were occupied, viz., 1a,
2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
and 16.
2. A day census gave 80 persons as living
in the above houses.
3. A census taken at midnight during two
surprise visits on November 10th and
21st showed the number of occupants to
be 91 and 103 respectively. It must
be borne in mind that the numbers
vary from day to day, which may
explain any discrepancies between the
above figures and those quoted in
the Court of Common Council on
behalf of the Petitioners.
