The estimated night population of the various Registration sub-districts is as under; to which the figures returned at the last Census are added for the purpose of comparison:—

The population of the City, as ascertained by
the Day Census taken by the Corporation at
its own expense, was found to be in 1866—
170,133; in 1881—261,061; and in 1891—
301,384, showing an increase between 1866
and 1881 of 90,928, and between 1881 and
1891 of 40,823, so that if this progressive
augmentation has been maintained since 1891,
a Day Census at June, 1898, would have shown
a population of about 334,050.
The Day Census taken in May, 1891, proved
that 1,186,000 persons and 92,000 vehicles
