I.—VITAL STATISTICS.
The Registrar-General returns the estimated population
of London* for the middle of the year 1895 as 4,392,346,†
consisting of 2,076,113 males and 2,316,233 females, and
states that there were registered during the year 37,593
marriages, 133,715 births (68,085 males and 65,630 females),
and 86,937 deaths (44,184 males and 42,753 females).
There were registered, too, 11,545 deaths from the seven
chief zymotic diseases. The excess of registered births
over deaths—i.e., the natural increment, is 46,778, and the
estimated increase of population is 43,395.
Calculated out, the uncorrected rates per 1,000 of the population are as follows:—
| Calculated out, the uncorrected rates per 1,000 of the population are as follows:— | |
| Marriage-Rate | 17.1 |
| Birth-Rate | 30.5 |
| Death (general)-Rate | 19.8 |
| Death (zymotic)-Rate | 2.64 |
If the deaths of strangers (1,799) are deducted, the corrected
death-rate is 19 4, and the corrected zymotic deathrate
2.62; whilst allowing for sex and age distribution the
death-rate for London is 21.15 per 1,000, the standard deathrate—(i.e.,
the death-rate at all ages, calculated on the
hypothesis that the rates at each of twelve age periods were
the same as in England and Wales during the 10 years 1881
—1890) being 17 97, and the factor for correction for sex
and age distribution (i.e., the death-rate at all ages in
England and Wales during 1881—1890 divided by the
standard death-rate for London) 1.0656. The death-rate
(corrected for age and sex distribution) is obtained by
multiplying the recorded death-rate by the factor for
correction.
Taking the corrected rates for London 1895, they may
be subdivided into Districts as follows:—
* By "London" is meant Registration London, i.e., the Administrative
County of London with the exception of the hamlet, or civil parish, of Penge.
t The Quinquennial Census (taken March 29th, 1896) gives the
enumerated population fpr London as 4,411,271,
