Public Health Department,
333, Kennington Road,
London, S.E.
May, 1896.
To the Chairman and Members of the Vestry of the Parish
of Lambeth.
Gentlemen,
I beg herewith to present to you my first Annual
Report on the Health and Sanitary Condition of your
Parish—the thirty-eighth Annual Report of the Medical
Officer of Health; and in doing so to mention that I have
carefully been over, and prepared, the various facts and
statistics, adding information in the form of Tables, from
which you will be able to gauge the progress you have
made in sanitary matters during the last 10 years.
Under the terms of my appointment under the Local
Government Board, I am only expected to write a Report
for the part of the year 1895 during which I have had the
honour to act as your Medical Officer of Health, but with
the permission of your Sewers and Sanitary Committee
(and at my suggestion), I am able to lay before you a
Report for the whole year.
I should be wanting in gratitude if I did not take the
opportunity of the presentation of this, my first Annual
Report as Medical Officer of Health for Lambeth, to again
thank you for having appointed me to such an important
Office, and to state that it will at all times be my constant
endeavour to worthily fill the position, and to do everything
I possibly can to give satisfaction to you as a Vestry,
both individually and collectively, consistent with the honest
execution of my duties.
To you, Mr. Chairman, especially, I owe thanks for the
kindness I have received at your hands in the way of
advice and suggestions, on taking up my duties as Medical
Officer of Health, and since.
I am, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
JOSEPH PRIESTLEY, B.A., M.D., D.P.H.,
Medical Officer of Health.
