Class VII.—Deaths from Violence.
Seventy-eight deaths, including 21 under five years of age,
and 14 under one year, are distributed over the four Orders
comprised in this Class : 22 of them belong to the Brompton
sub-district.
1. Accident or Negligence.—Total deaths, 61, including
14 in Brompton, and 21 under five years of age ; viz.,
from Fractures and Contusions, 35 ; Burn, Scald, 8 ; Poison, 2 ;
Drowning, 3 ; Suffocation, of infants " overlaid," 13, all under
one year. Twelve of the deaths from suffocation were registered
in the Town sub-district..
2. Homicide.—Manslaughter, one death.
3. Suicide.—Total deaths, 16,including 8 in Brompton ;
viz., by Cut, Stab, 4 ; Poison, 5 ; Gun-shot Wounds, 3 ;
Drowning, 2 ; Hanging, 1 ; Otherwise, 1.
Class VIII.—Deaths from Ill-Defined and not
Specified Causes.
This Class includes the causes of 150 deaths ; 118 under
five years of age, and 106 under one year : 127 and 23 in the
Town and Brompton sub-districts respectively. The causes
named are ; Debility, Atrophy, Inanition, 115 deaths (all but 12
under one year); Dropsy, 2; Mortification, 2; Abscess, 3;
Tumour, 5 ; and Hemorrhage, 1. To " Causes not Specified or
Ill-defined," 22 deaths were ascribed.
