the North-West district which comprises, among others,
Bangor Street, St. Ann's Road, St. Katherine's Road,
Stoneleigh Street, William Street, Crescent Street, and St.
Clement's Road, the North-West District was divided accordingly.
At the same time a small group of streets, including
Bomore Road, Testerton Street, Barandon Street, and
Manchester Street, was taken from the North District and
tacked on to Division B of the North-West District.
The Sanitary Inspecting Staff now comprises
seven Inspectors and two Assistant Inspectors, irrespective
of the two Women Inspectors of Workshops, &c. The
clerical staff comprises a Chief Clerk and three Assistant
Clerks. The Disinfector and the Mortuary Keeper complete
the list of Officers in the Public Health Department, the
cost of which, including the salary of the Medical Officer of
Health, is considerably less than one-third of a penny in the
pound on the rateable value of the parish. A considerable
portion of this, however, viz., half the salaries of five of the
Sanitary Inspectors, is repaid to your Vestry by the London
County Council, from which body a still larger subvention could
be obtained under the provisions of the Local Government Act,
1888, and the Public Health (London) Act, 1891. During
the year a large amount of house-to-house inspection was
carried out in all parts of the parish by the several inspectors ;
and 1897 notices were issued, by order of the Sanitary Committee,
involving reconstruction, or trapping and ventilating
of drains, amongst other sanitary amendments of the houses
dealt with. The written intimations of nuisances served by
the Inspectors, under section 3 of the Act, numbered 2724.
As a result of these intimations, in a large number of cases,
the works necessary for the abatement of nuisances were
carried out, by the persons liable, without the service of the
statutory notice, which is issued only on the order of the
Sanitary Committee.
