been in the Vestry's service they had qualified themselves
for the office of Sanitary Inspector by obtaining the Certificate
of the Sanitary Institute. The Report of the SubCommittee
was adopted by the Committee, who, on the 11th
April, reported to your Vestry their concurrence with the
Sub-Committee 'as to the expediency of renewing the
appointment of the Inspectors during the pleasure of the
Vestry,'and stated their opinion 'that the discharge of the
duties devolving upon them would be materially facilitated
were the Inspectors vested with the powers which attach to a
Sanitary Inspector.' The Committee accordingly recommended,
' That the appointments of Miss Squire and Miss
Deane be continued during the pleasure of the Vestry, and
that they be vested with the status of Sanitary Inspectors,
subject to the approval of the Local Government Board.'
The Committee's Report was referred back on a technical
objection, and in a subsequent Report, adopted by your
Vestry on the 25th April, the day the six months' term
ended, the Committee, whilst fully confirming the previous
favourable reference to the satisfactory manner in which the
Inspectors had performed their duties, and still holding to
' the expediency of the appointments being renewed for a
further period,' did not, ' upon further consideration . . .
adhere to that portion of their former recommendation which
suggested that the appointments should be continued during
the pleasure of the Vestry, and that the Inspectors should
be vested with the status of Sanitary Inspectors.' The Committee
accordingly recommended, simply, that the appointments
' be continued for a further period of one year.' But
prior to the meeting of your Vestry, viz., on the 23rd April,
it became my pleasing duty to report to the Committee that
Miss Deane had been appointed a Government Inspector of
Factories, Workshops, &c., and therefore could not accept
