"prohibiting the school from being used for habitation until I am satisfied that it has
" been made fit for habitation."
The magistrate also allowed five guineas costs.
All which is submitted.
ROBERT S. CUFFLIN, Chairman.
Moved by Mr. Cufflin, seconded, and resolved—That the foregoing report be
received and approved.
A reference has already been made on page 41 as to the influence
of these schools on Diphtheria both before and after the execution of
the works ordered by the magistrate.
Hanover-street Board School.
On the decision of the magistrate respecting the drains of the
Yerbury-road Board School being made known, the School Board for
London, against whom a summons had been issued, calling on them to
carry out similar works at the Hanover-street Board School, agreed to
comply with the demands of the Public Health Department. The
summons was therefore held over sine die, and finally withdrawn on
the completion of the works.
DISINFECTION OF HOUSES.
The calls on the Department to disinfect houses after infectious
disease have been so numerous that the ordinary staff (one man) was
found altogether unable to cope with it. In consequence additional
assistance was engaged, and at least four men were constantly employed
at disinfecting rooms and stripping walls, and at times five and even
six men were at work.
The Public Health (London) Act, 1891, sec. 60, provides that when
the Medical Officer of Health, or any practitioner, certifies that the
cleansing and disinfecting "of any house or part thereof" would tend
to prevent or check any dangerous infectious disease, "the sanitary
authority shall serve notice on the master or owner that the house, &c.,
will be cleansed and disinfected unless he informs the sanitary authority
within 24 hours from the receipt of the notice that he will do it
himself."
