In the 2nd quarter the principal causes were Measles 13 deaths,
Whooping Cough 25, Diarrhoea 49, Tabes Mesenterica 26, Premature
Birth 48, Meningitis 12, Convulsions 23, Bronchitis 21, Pneumonia 15,
Suffocation 14, Debility 20, Marasmus 36, and Inanition 22.
The returns of the 3rd quarter show that the chief factors of
the mortality were Whooping Cough 22, Diarrhoea 121, Tabes Mesenterica
35, Phthisis 10, Premature Birth 36, Convulsions 16, Bronchitis
19, Pneumonia 12, Enteritis 26, Debility 34, Marasmus 63, and,
Inanition, 22.
In the 4th quarter the principal causes were Whooping Cough 13,
Diarrhoea 12, Tabes Mesenterica 12, Premature Birth 47, Convulsions
16, Bronchitis 63, Pneumonia 29, Suffocation 15, Debility 27, Marasmus
43, and Inanition 26.
The excessive heat of the second and third quarters was without
doubt the cause of the excessive mortality from diarrhœal diseases, as
well as from diseases of the digestive organs, and these raised the deathrate
among infants above that of the preceding year.
