Still one cannot close his eyes to this fact, that the older parts of
this Parish which, a comparatively few years ago, were inhabited by
the wealthier classes, are now occupied by persons in inferior positions
in life, and even by the poorer classes—by the masses. These houses,
formerly occupied by single families, are now for the most part tenanted
by two or more families, and are, therefore, more crowded and less
salubrious.
The last census, for the first time, gave the public an insight into
the manner in which Islingtonians are lodged in tenements, but
unfortunately it did not give particulars respecting the sub-districts—
a defect which is to be regretted, as the information would be invaluable
to this Authority. From the returns I have extracted the following
table, a study of which will well repay those persons who take an interest
in the housing of the working classes and in the health of the
community.
