The fatality was very considerable, no less than 20·9 (say 21) per
cent. of the total cases notified having died.
It was greatest in the first quarter of the year, when 22·2 per cent.
of the patients died, and least in the fourth quarter, when 20·3 per
cent. succumbed.
The fatality varied very considerably in the districts; for example,
it was as low as 7·4 in Highbury in the third quarter, and as high as
42·1 per cent. in Islington South East in the first quarter.
The figures in the following table are of serious interest, for they
declare with unspeakable force that Diphtheria is one of the most fatal
diseases that dwells with us at the present time.
