It is of this opinion because the Public Health Department has cognizance of
the surroundings of every case, and of the necessity, or otherwise, of each patient's
removal.
The Committee and myself are aware that cases have been removed on the
application of medical men, and private individuals, when it is believed much more
public good would have resulted by isolating other cases of greater urgency, known
to the Sanitary Authority.
I am desired to request you to bring this matter before the proper Committee.
The resolution of the Committee had referenca only to those times when your
beds, owing to the great prevalence of an epidemic, are not so numerous as the
applications.
I am, Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
ALFRED E. HARRIS,
T. DunCOMbe Mann, E.q., Clerk, Medical Officer of Health.
Metropolitan Asylums Board.
Resolved : That a communication be addreseed to the Metropolitan Asylums Board
requesting that all cases of infectious disease removed to its hospitals, should only be
romoved on the application of the Sanitary Authority.
As was to be expected from a body who is very anxious to obtain
additional powers, this most reasonable application was refused, as will
be seen by the following letter:—
The Metropolitan Asylum Board,
Norfolk House, Norfolk Street, W.C.,
11 th December, 1893.
Alfred E. Harris, Esq.,
Medical Officer of Health,
Islington Vestry.
Dear Sir,
I submitted to the Managers at their meeting on Saturday last your
letter of the 30th ult, forwarding a copy of the resolution passed by your Vestry,
requesting that all cases of infectious disease removed to the Managers' Hospitals,
should be on the application of the Sanitary Authority.
After consideration, the Managers' adopted the resolution, a copy of which I
forward you on the other side.
Yours faithfully,
T. DUNCOMBE MANN,
Clerk to the Board.
Resolved: That in reply to their letter, the Islington Vestry bo informed that
the managers do not see their way to restrict the means of application for the removal of
patients to hospital from any portion of the Metropolis in the manner suggested by the
Vestry, or to adopt any other method for the selection of cases for admission than that at
present in force.
