were no deaths in the, by comparison, insanitary area of Islington
South-East.
The records of Islington for the past 23 years are as follows:—
In the 10 years 1871 —80, the deaths numbered 208, being an
average of 21 per annum.
In the 10 years 1881-90, the total number of deaths was 167, or
an annual average of nearly 17.
In this period there were 89,593 births registered, so that deaths
were at the rate of 1 .86 per 1,000 children born.
The deaths in proportion to every 1,000 births in 1891 were 0.8l,
in 1892 2.40, and in 1893 1.33.
The mortality has been calculated on the number registered births
as it is believed to be the only accurate manner in which it can be
exhibited.
ERYSIPELAS.
The deaths from Erysipelas were 3 in number, compared with 20
in the preceding year, and with 9 in 1891. The deaths give a
death rate of 0.41. In proportion to population it was most fatal in
Upper Holloway, and least so in Highbury. In the former district it
caused 13 deaths, and in the latter 4, while in Islington South East
and Islington South West, 11 and 6 deaths were respectively registered.
