From Table IV. I extract the information that these 12,949 overcrowded
tenements, containing 64,604 persons, lodge 20.24 per cent. of
the total population of the Parish, who I farther find were distributed
as follows:—
In one-roomed tenements... 15,150 or 4.75 per cent. of the population.
„two-roomed„ 23,524 „ 8.94„ „
„three-roomed„ 13,742 „ 4.30,, „
„four-roomed„ 7,188 „ 2.25„ „
In all overcrowded tenements 64,604 „ 20.24„ „
From these figures and from Table V. (column 13) I find that out
of 8.83 per cent. of the population living in one-roomed tenements,
4.75 per cent. are overcrowded; of the 19.00 per cent. living in tworoomed
tenements, 8.94 per cent. are overcrowded; of the 15.28 per cent.
living in three-roomed tenements, 4.30 are overcrowded; and of the 12.92
per cent. living in four-roomed tenements, 2.25 are overcrowded. It is
found, too, that of those persons who live in tenements consisting of
not more than five rooms, the largest proportion dwell in those composed
of two and three rooms (Table V., column 13), and also that
the greatest overcrowding occurs in the same class of tenements.
Upon analysing still further the figures already given, I find that
the 12,949 overcrowded tenements are occupied on an average by 4.94
persons per tenement, and that they contain 25,059 rooms, which are
occupied on an average by 2.57 persons per room. This overcrowding
is greatest in the single tenements, where it is 3.71 persons per room;
next greatest in the three-roomed tenements, where the figure is 2.61;
then in the four-roomed tenements, where there are 2.41 persons; and
least in the two-roomed tenements, where there are 2.23 per room.
Perhaps, however, the latter figure is not altogether so small relatively
as it appears, for it must not be forgotten that in many cases the
occupants will use one room for a living-room or kitchen, and will crowd
themselves together at night in the other room, which they will use
solely as a bed-room. If this overcrowding be bad, and it is undoubtedly
