Table II. shows the population of Camberwell at the
census of 1896 together with the estimated number of inhabitants
at the middle of that year and also at a similar period in 1897,
assuming that the rate of increase has been regular.

Table III. gives the total number of births registered
during the year in the Parish. It will be seen that there is an
apparent decrease, the figures for 1897 being 7,478, while those
for 1896 were 7,665, giving a deficiency of 187; this deficiency
is really greater, for in 1896 the year was considered to consist
of 53 weeks, whereas 1897 was reckoned as having 52 weeks
only. Consequently in drawing any comparisons between the
figures an allowance must be made for this. In Dulwich and
in Peckham there is an increase, while in Camberwell and
St. George's there is a decrease. The actual figures are shown
below in tabular form.
