COWSHEDS, DAIRIES AND M1LKSHOPS.
In company with the Sanitary Inspector I have inspected
these places each quarter, and furnished reports
upon their condition to the Health Committee.
I am glad to say these have nearly always been of a
satisfactory nature.
SLAUGHTER HOUSES AND BAKEHOUSES.
These too have been inspected quarterly and reported
upon.
Besides my regular inspections the Sanitary Inspector
has made various inspections from time to time.
No unsound meat was discovered at any of the inspections,
or serious infringements of bye-laws.
The Bakehouses especially are very well constructed
and have been kept in good sanitary condition.
HOUSE ACCOMMODATION.
This appears to be quite adequate for all classes of
the population. Rents of working-class houses are very
high in proportion to the weekly earnings, and this still
leads to the evils of overcrowding and sub-letting referred
to in previous Reports.
In May, two houses situated in Canning Road, one
in Byron Road, and two in Milton Road were inspected
by me, and owing to their condition the Council was
advised to make closing orders in regard to them. This
was done, with the result that the properties were put
into satisfactory sanitary condition by the owners.
I have made various other inspections where overcrowding
and bad sanitary conditions have been reported
to me by the Sanitary Inspector, but in these cases the
necessary work has been carried out without the need for
further proceedings. Sixty-five premises were inspected
on complaint; 86 in connection with Infectious Diseases;
and there were 1472 inspections and re-inspections made
in all.
