North-West, about two-thirds being to the North and
one-third to the South of the line.
The number of inhabitants per house at the last
Government Census was 578. The population is very
largely composed of the industrial classes, and a large
proportion travel daily to and from the City and other
parts of London to their employment. There are seven
factories, some of considerable size, in the district; and
these employ several hundreds of workers, both male
and female. None of the factories come under the definition
" dangerous and unhealthy industries." A fairly
large proportion of those persons not employed in these
factories belong to the unskilled labour class. House
accommodation for all classes is ample. There is an
excellent Recreation Ground of about 24 acres, well provided
with all the necessary pitches, tennis courts, &c.,
&c., and planted with trees and shrubs. This was opened
in 1902, and has been a great boon to the inhabitants,
especially the juveniles. The Cemetery, consisting of
about six acres, was opened in November, 1902, and is
situated to the East of the Recreation Ground.
The water supply of the district is wholly from the
Colne Valley Water Company.
At the close of the year there were 1,913 occupied
houses and 307 occupied flats in the district. Thirtyeight
houses were in course of erection.
