could be taught to know something of the real nature of
Small-Pox;, its loathsome and disfiguring nature, and
terrible infective power, and danger to life, when unmodi
fied by vaccination, they would look upon vaccination
as the real blessing to humanity that it is, A severe
outbreak of the disease in the future, will probably show
them the mistake they are making.
METHOD EMPLOYED TO DISINFECT PREMISES
AFTER INFECTIOUS SICKNESS, &c.
Rooms are disinfected by fumigation with Formalin
and Sulphur in combination, walls and wooden surfaces
being sprayed with strong Formalin solution. We have
a small portable apparatus for disinfecting bedding and
woollen fabrics, &c., by means of super-heated steam.
Rooms in which persons affected with Consumption or
Cancer have been domiciled are disinfected, if the cases
are reported to the Medical Officer of Health or Sanitary
Inspector, free of charge. Details of the number of premises,
articles of clothing, &c., disinfected or destroyed will
be found in the Sanitary Inspector's report, appended to
the end of this report.
SUMMARY OF SANITARY WORK DONE BY
INSPECTORS.
244 house-to-house inspections were made; 23
premises inspected in connection with Infectious Diseases
and 40 on complaint of nuisances. Sixty-three premises
were under periodical inspection, 83 cautionary notices
were given and 41 statutory orders issued. Thirty-one
premises were cleansed and repaired; 48 rooms disinfected
for ordinary Infectious Disease and 18 for
Phthisis. Thirty drains were examined, repaired or
trapped; 5 disconnecting traps or chambers inserted
and g soil pipes or ventilating shafts fixed or repaired.
Thirty-one new dust bins were provided. Many
nuisances were abated. These were chiefly connected
with smoke from factory shafts, overcrowding, refuse
accumulations, foul ditches and stagnant water, domestic
animals kept in a dirty condition, dampness of houses
and yards, &c. All houses are supplied with waterclosets
and 927 per cent, of houses drain into the sewers.
