PHYSICIAL FEATURES AND GENERAL
CHARACTER OF DISTRICT.
The Urban District of Wealdstone was formed in
June, 1894. Its area is about 1,061 acres. The shape
of the District is very irregular, having a kind of
"shoulder of mutton" formation. The surface is for the
most part flat, but rises gradually towards the North
and West, from which elevation, in times of storm, a
great deal of surface water finds its way to the lowlying
parts. The soil is clay. The District is bounded
on the North, East and West by portions of the Hendon
Rural District, and on the South-East and South by the
Districts of Kingsbury, Wembley and Harrow. The
London and North-Western Railway runs through the
District from South-East to North-West, about twothirds
being to the North and one-third to the South.
The number of persons to each house at the last Government
Census was 578. The population is very largely
composed of the industrial classes, and a large proportion
travel daily to and from the City and other parts
of London to their employment. There are 7 factories,
some of considerable size, in the district, and these
employ several hundreds of workers, both male and
female. None of the factories come under the definition
" dangerous and unhealthy industries."
A fairly large proportion of those persons not
employed in the factories belong to the unskilled labour
class. House accommodation for all classes is ample.
There is an excellent Recreation Ground of about 24
acres, well provided with all the necessary pitches, tennis
courts, etc., etc., and planted with trees and shrubs.
This was opened in 1902, and has been a great boon to
the inhabitants, especially the juveniles. The Cemetery,
consisting of about 6 acres of land, was opened in
November, 1902, and is situated to the East of the
Recreation Ground.
The water supply is wholly from the Colne Valley
Water Company.
At the close of the year there were 1813 occupied
houses and 325 occupied flats in the district. Twentynine
houses were in course of erection.
