WATER SUPPLY.
This is from the Colne Valley Water Company. All.
houses are supplied on the constant system. No complaints
have been received.
DUST REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL.
House refuse is collected weekly by the Council's,
own men and carts. The refuse is tipped at the Sewage
Disposal Works, as much as possible being burnt. But
of course this last could only be carried out satisfactorily
by means of a dust destructor. The Council have considered
this, but do not at present feel justified in incurring
the considerable cost which its purchase and fixing
would entail. 1614 loads of House Refuse were carted
to the Farm equal to 076 load per house.
SEWAGE DISPOSAL WORKS.
The system employed for the treatment of theSewage
is by natural precipitation in open septic tanks,
the more fluid portion passing on to filter beds of clinkers,
upon which it is automatically dispersed by means of
sprinklers. The effluent is then distributed over the land
for further treatment before finally discharging into the
brook course. Generally, except in time of storm, a very
satisfactory effluent has been obtained. The original
scheme, laid down 8 or g years ago, was estimated to
deal with a population of 10,000. Additional tanks of
160,000 gallons capacity, and a filter dealing with
150,000 gallons of sewage per diem, have since then been
constructed, but additional works are urgently needed in
order to keep pace with the increasing flow of sewage
which has to be treated. After very careful consideration
the Council have resolved to construct additional works,,
and have adopted a scheme drawn up by the Surveyor,
who has devoted much time and trouble to its preparation.
An Inquiry by an Inspector from the Local
Government Board was held on December 2nd, when the
scheme was explained in detail by the Surveyor. It involves
the purchase of additional land to the extent of
11 acres adjacent to the present works. The 15 inch
sewer from manhole No. 15 along Station Road to the
brook course manhole No. 11 is to be taken up and
replaced by a new 18 inch sewer, which is to turn at
manhole 11 and follow the brook course and passage
