Nine inspections of Factories and 84 of Workshops
were made. Seven written notices were served to make
good defects. Defects found on inspection were want of
cleanliness (1). defective drainage (2), insufficient sanitary
accommodation, and other minor nuisances (4). All
these were made good.

HOUSING OF THE WORKING CLASSES, OVERCROWDING,
ETC.
The remarks made upon these matters in previous
Annual Reports still apply to some portions of the district.
Although there are plenty of houses of this class, rents
are unfortunately very high, and much too large a proportion
of the weekly wage has to go in rent, leaving too little
to provide adequate nourishing food, proper clothing, and
other necessaries of life. In order to mitigate this so far
as possible, many are really compelled to sub-let a portion
of the house, or to take lodgers, thus naturally leading
up to overcrowding and its attendant evils. I do not
think the evil exists to a dangerous extent. I do, however,
