STATISTICS AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS
OF THE AREA.
The Rural District of Orsett comprises the Orsett
Poor Law Union with the exception of the Urban
Districts of Grays, Tilbury and Purfleet. It is situated
upon the northern bank of the Thames opposite
Gravesend, and has three river frontages, two small and
one large; the latter extending from the eastern
boundary of Tilbury Urban District to Shell Haven.
The frontage within the parish of Little Thurrock
contains a large portion of Tilbury Docks.
The district is divided into two portions of entirely
separate characters. Surrounding Grays, Tilbury and
Purfleet, it is of an urban type, containing residential
areas, factories, cement works and docks. Inland the
district assumes the ordinary agricultural aspect typical
of Essex. Within the parishes of Stanford-le-Hope
and Langdon Hills communities of people are spreading
rapidly, and their housing accommodation requires
constant supervision.
