nent injury to health, and the difficulty in obtaining samples
of vegetable matter affected by the fumes near by. Up to the
end of the year no legal action has been taken. Frequent inspection
of the works have been made. The firm give assurance
of their endeavours to abate the nuisance complained of.
INFANT WELFARE WORK.
The appointment of Miss Gibson in addition to Miss Allcorn
has been of great advantage, as the work was getting too
great for one Health Visitor alone to cope with. I am pleased
to report that Miss Gibson is an excellent officer and well received
by mothers. Miss Allcorn continues her work energetically
and most efficiently. The Council has now taken control
of Little Thurrock and Langdon Hills Centres, making in all
six Welfare Centres in the following parishes: West Thurrock,
South Ockendon, Stanford-le-Hope, Little Thurrock, Orsett,
Langdon Hills.
Visits paid by Health Visitors numbered:
To Expectant Mothers 210
To Infants under 1 year 3873
To Children under 5 years 1951
Anti-natal work can only be carried out by the Health
Visitors, but not at the Centres, owing to lack of proper accommodation.
The high figure of Infant Mortality this last year is regrettable,
and may in part be due to the want of properly organised
anti-natal work, as most of the infant deaths being due to premature
birth.
During Health Week the film "Empire Builders" was
shown at Grays Cinema, with an attendance of over 500 mothers
and children. It was much appreciated and did good
educational work.
