Isolation Hospital.
Description of
Isolation Hospital
The Isolation Hospital stands in four acres of ground,
one-and-a-half acres of which (immediately surrounding the
Hospital) are enclosed with oak park palings 6-ft. 6-in. high.
The administrative block consists of a two-storied building, with
four downstairs rooms (two sitting-rooms and two kitchens),
with five bedrooms and bath-room over for nurses and
caretakers. The Hospital itself is in the form of detached
pavilions, in which three separate diseases can be treated
at the same time, both male and female (16 beds in
all). There is a detached shed, dead-house, wash-house,
and "Sulphur" chamber for disinfection. There is also
a shallow well from which water is obtained for washing
wards and filling a tank for fire-extinguishing purposes.
The water from this shallow well has been very scarce
this year, in fact it has all but given out. The water supply
is from a deep well (80 feet) going down into the chalk.
The staff at the Hospital consists of a caretaker and his wife
and a female servant; further nursing help is obtained as
required. Seventeen cases of Small-pox, one of Typhoid
Fever, and two of Scarlet Fever were treated in Hospital.
Four cases of Small-pox died. Three of the cases of Smallpox
and the two cases of Scarlet Fever were admitted from
Grays, and two cases of Small-pox were admitted from Romford
Rural Sanitary District.
