North, edge of the Marshes the land rises to a height of
100-ft. or so, the greater part of the District being a tableland,
which gradually falls to the North.
Villages with
Public Water
Supply
Little Thurroek, West Thurroek, Stifford, South Ockendon
and North Ockendon, and that part of Chadwell-St
Mary round Tilbury Docks and the Dock Dwellings all have
the South-Essex Waterworks mains going through them,
and for the most part are supplied from this source. The
superficial wells in these districts are being closed as necessity
requires.
Character and
source of water
used in other
villages
Bulphan and the Eastern parts of North Ockendon are
supplied with water from deep artesian wells (over 100-ft.
deep), which constantly overflow above the surface of the
ground. Orsett, East Tilbury and Mucking are supplied from
superficial wells. The upper parts of West Tilbury and
Chadwell-St.-Mary from deep wells, many 70 or 80-ft. deep.
Stanford-le-Hope, the older part of the village is supplied
from a superficial well near the railway ; the newer part, to
the North, by superficial wells; and the still newer part, to
the South, by superficial but much deeper wells. Horndonon-the-Hill
is supplied from a superficial public well to the
South (Pump Street), and the water is carted up to the
village in butts and retailed at a ¼d. per pail. Corringham
is supplied from a superficial public well. Eobbing is chiefly
supplied from two wells, one at the bottom of the hill to the
West, and the other a private well in the " White Lion "
yard. Laindon Hills is the worst supplied village in the
district, the supply for that part called Dry Street is from a
spring, in what is no more than a pool or pond, and constantly
liable to pollution from surface water.
Villages with
Public Sewers
None. A main sewer has been laid from Tilbury
Station to join the Grays system, and this, when completed,
will drain the bouses and buildings on Tilbury Docks and the
surx-ounding parts of Chadwell-St.-Mary and Little Thurroek.

In no parish is there a proper sewerage system. At
Orsett, the Union House and about 25 cottages are connected
with a sewer discharging into a subsidence tank, which also
receives the sewage from 20 to 25 houses and cottages to the
East of church—the overflow runs into a ditch some 300
yards away. At Stanford-le-Hope the brewery and about
30 cottages drain into a tidal creek. At Horndon-on-theHill,
South Ockendon, Aveley and West Thurrock, some few
cottages are connected with drains, which empty themselves
into the nearest ditch. At South Ockendon the ditches to the
South and East were found very foul, and were temporarily disinfected
with lime. A committee inspected with the Medical
