Disinfection.
The total number of rooms disinfected after the occurrence
of cases of infectious disease was 5,340 (974 in Clapham, 511 in
Putney, 1,570 in Streatham, 841 in Tooting, and 1,444 in
Wandsworth).
3,216 lots of bedding were stoved at the Disinfecting Station,
comprising the following articles: 1,841 beds, 1,655 bolsters,
4,692 pillows, 2,089 mattresses, 32 palliasses, 3,534 sheets,
2,862 quilts, 813 cushions, 8,194 articles of clothing, 5,920
blankets, 260 carpets, and 3,066 extra articles; a total of 34,958
articles.
Disinfection was also carried out by the Sanitary Staff at
premises after non-notifiable diseases, and the sum of £40 9s.
6d. was received for such disinfection.
620 rooms were disinfected with sulphur, in consequence of
their verminous condition, and 24 lots of verminous bedding
disinfected.
During the year, at the request of the Military Authorities,
2,227 articles of clothing and bedding were disinfected and 12
rooms sprayed on account of having been exposed to infection.
The approximate cost of working and maintaining the Disinfecting
Station during the past year, including the cost of
disinfectants used in fumigating and cleansing rooms, was
£2,928 18s. 0d.
The number of lots of bedding stoved was 3,216.
Cost per lot of bedding £0 18s. 2d.
Carrier Cases.
Very few carrier cases came to the knowledge of the Department
during the year under review, but the usual procedure
in the case of Diphtheria was to keep the children at home, and
periodical swabs were taken until two successive negative results
were obtained.
