716 visits were made by the Dispensary Nurses in connection
with these cases during the year.
Contacts.—Of the 1,555 new cases examined, 459 were
contacts. Twelve of these were found to be suffering from Tuberculosis
and one is a suspected case.
Care Committee.—During the year the Care Committee has
extended its activities in a new direction and has succeeded in
raising funds to maintain a bed for dying cases of Tuberculosis
at St. Columba's Hospital, Hampstead. For some time it has
been clear that further provision was needed for patients of this
class who were too ill to be treated at home, especially owing to
the difficulty in arranging for their admission to other institutions.
After the matter had been considered by the Committee,
Mrs. Nicol undertook to organise a Japanese Fair in Streatham
in order to raise funds. Together with a few of her friends, who
went into the matter enthusiastically, she gave a great deal of
time to making the necessary arrangements, and the Fair which
was held in November proved a great success. Sufficient funds
were raised to maintain one bed at the Hospital for two years.
This bed has been in use continuously since June, and arrangements
have been made with the Hospital for the temporary
use of other beds at times when more than one is needed. Eight
