Population.
The population for 1931, as given by the Registrar-General, was
107,200, compared with 115,900 in 1925. One of the factors in bringing
this about has been the number of families for whom the London
County Council has provided accommodation upon their estates outside
Deptford. Thus, during the last six years, 1,952 Deptford families
have been so accommodated. A further factor contributing to the
decrease has been the fall in the birth-rate, viz., from 18.8 in 1925, to
16.3 in 1931, although this reduction has to some slight extent been offset
by the lower death-rate which has fallen from 12.1 in 1925 to 12.0 in
1931.
Marriages.
During the year 879 marriages took place, equivalent to a rate of
8.2 persons marrying per 1,000 of the population. By courtesy of the

Births.
The steadily declining birth-rate in the country, generally, has its
counterpart in Deptford.
After allowing for inward and outward transfers, i.e., the addition
of 453 children born of Deptford parents outside the Borough, and the
deduction of 59 children born inside the Borough, but whose parents
reside normally outside its boundaries, the number of births registered
as belonging to the Borough was 1,745. This is equivalent to a birth-rate
of 16.3 per 1,000 of the population and the second lowest on record, and
represents only a natural increase of 4.3 per 1,000 of the population.
