Midwives.
The Borough Council is not the supervising authority under the
Midwives Acts. From a return provided by the County Council, the
number of midwives practising in the Borough is estimated at twenty.
No subsidy is paid to midwives locally.
Maternal Sickness and Mortality.
The Borough Council appointed Dr. W. Gilliatt, Obstetric Surgeon
to King's College Hospital, as consultant under the Puerperal Fever and
Puerperal Pyrexia Regulations, 1926. Circular instructions were sent
to all medical practitioners informing them that Dr. Gilliatt's services
were available on notifying a case under these Regulations.
As regards maternal deaths, the method of enquiry suggested by the
Ministry of Health and the questionnaire issued by the Maternal
Mortality Committee set up by the Ministry have been used. The
information relating to such deaths is collected and compiled personally
by the Medical Officer of Health. In 'cases where the circumstances
are such as to warrant expert investigation, the Council has retained
the services of Dr. Gilliatt to confer with the practitioner concerned
and to report his investigations to the Medical Officer of Health.
Health Education.
Towards the end of the year under report, the Council entered into
an agreement for the supply of 2,000 copies monthly of the periodical
Better Health. This magazine is the publication of the Central
Council of Health Education, the subject matter therein consisting of
articles on health matters written by experts. The first local edition
of this magazine was published in January, 1930.
