The workshop consists of two fair-sized rooms opening into each
other and well lighted and ventilated at each end by windows. We
pointed out to the manageress that there was a tendency to closeness,
and requested that attention should be given to the ventilation.
Sanitary Accommodation. One w.c. is provided for the eleven
female employees; the condition of the same is satisfactory.
6. Sign Manufacturers.
In both these factories, situated in Rolt Street and Blackhorse
Road, signs of all kinds are manufactured. Thus we saw enamelled
copper letters for fixing upon glass, enamelled iron tablets and plates,
electric signs, daylight signs, embossed and enamelled glass tablets,
designs, etc., etc. At Rolt Street, the factory is constructed in the
railway arches. The lighting and ventilation are good: the particular
nature of the industry called for the installation of a special type of
ventilation plant. At Blackhorse Road the work consists chiefly in
the manufacture and embossing of glass signs and tablets, whilst wood
letters and designs are also made. This is a spacious two-storey
building divided into rooms in which the various processes are carried
on until the particular article is finished off. The grinding agencies
are on " wet " lines, so that there is no danger of any of the employees
contracting lung disease through the inhalation of particulate glass
which otherwise would float into the atmosphere. Special air ducts
and exhaust fans confirm this protection, while the general ventilation
of the factory is effected by open skylights and windows ; the natural
and artificial lighting throughout are both good. It is pleasing to
record that the firm provides milk for the girls who are employed in the
aerograph process, while tea is provided free to the whole of the
employees daily-
Sanitary Accommodation. There is ample provision of soap and
towels in connection with the washing accommodation. The w.c.
section is modern, clean, well lighted and ventilated; this applies to
both factories. At Blackhorse Road there are three w.c.'s for the 47
men and four for the 71 women. At Rolt Street there are two w.c.'s
for the 12 men, and two for the 23 women employed.
Copper Enamel Letters. The blanks are stamped out of thin sheet
copper, then annealed and cleaned by brushes. In rare instances the
letters are cut out by hand. The letters are then coated with gum by
