Asphalt Tar Paving. Granite is passed through crushers until
broken up to a required size. This is passed into a mixer where it is
coated with a solution of tar, bitumen, oil, etc., to give it the necessary
binding properties. This is generally used for the foundations of roads,
paths, etc. The asphalt is imported in bulk from various parts of the
Continent. It is remelted at the works and cast into blocks for convenience
of transit. The asphalt is melted again at the street or road
where it is to be used, and laid hot; sometimes it is mixed with small
fragments of white stone, or stone dust, to give it a required appearance
or colour. This is largely used for footpaths, tennis courts, etc.
Sanitary Accommodation. As a rule 90 men are employed, for
whom there are four w.c.'s and two urinals. In accordance with a
suggestion recently made by us, the accommodation is being reconstructed
on modern lines. One section, two w.c.'s and one urinal, has
been completed (at the stone manufacture part of the premises), while
work is at present proceeding on the second section. At the first
section, the old w.c.'s, etc., which were situated within the workshops,
were abolished ; the new w.c.'s and urinal are constructed outside the
building. The enclosures are made of artificial stone impervious to
water, and are designed to give the maximum amount of light, ventilation
and privacy.
Workshops. Owing to the nature of the industry carried on, it is
impossible to keep all places clean and free from dust, but wherever
possible walls are kept limewashed and the floors properly drained.
Much of the work is carried on in the open air. By means of skylights,
windows and open doors, a good standard of ventilation is maintained
in the shops.
