The total number of patients certified to be suffering from Diphtheria
was 468 as compared with a total of 412 for the previous year. Of
this number 24 were errors of diagnosis, and 13 were cases amongst
the Staff of the South-Eastern Hospital.
There were 13 deaths as compared with 14, 19 and 23 for the three
preceding years, giving a death rate of 0-11 per 1,000 population as
compared with 0.06 for England and Wales, and 0.09 for London.
In my previous reports the causes, the prevention, the question of
immunity, the Schick test, Inoculation, etc., etc., have been dealt with
at length.
During the year 1928 the contacts of all cases of diphtheria were
examined by me. Further, children coming from hospital after
diphtheria were likewise examined. Schick test and Inoculation have
been carried out as per the annexed Table:—

Enteric Fever.

Eight cases of Enteric Fever were notified as compared with 10 in
the previous year. There was one death.
Five of these cases were enteric fever proper, three were Paratyphoid
B. fever, whilst in the remaining two cases the patients
were discharged from hospital as "not suffering," after a period of
observation.
