The following is the table of deaths occurring in the district, from zymotic causes during the past three years.
1890 | 1891. | 1892. | |
---|---|---|---|
Small Pox | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Measles | 31 | 39 | 73 |
Scarlet Fever | 0 | 0 | 2 |
Whooping Cough | 34 | 22 | 19 |
Diarrhoea | 32 | 43 | 33 |
Dysentery | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Cholera | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Fever. | 6 | 10 | 2 |
103 | 114 | 129 |
The above table shows an increase, in reference to the previous
year, of 15 deaths arising from zymotic causes, but on examination
of the table of deaths a decrease of 11 is found, which is
satisfactory, considering the severe outbreaks of measles, scarlet
fever, and diphtheria, which have taken place during the year.
With regard to the threatened epidemic of cholera in July,
August, and September, the most vigilant and strict measures
were taken, with the encouraging result that not a single case
occurred in either of the united parishes.
The compulsory notification of disease continues to be of the
greatest assistance, owing to the promptitude of the medical
gentlemen in reporting cases, and the inspectors in immediately
attending to the reports, and, whenever possible, removing the
patients to the hospitals, where they are properly nursed, the
spread of disease is checked, and cases that might frequently
terminate fatally speedily become convalescent.
The following table is a copy of the tabular returns of deaths,
taking each parish separately, in accordance with the form
prescribed by the Local Government Board; but it must be
remembered that the entry of "deaths occurring outside the
district, among persons belonging thereto," has been entered on
St. Margaret's paper for both parishes, it being impossible to
separate them,
