Thirteen summonses were taken out during the year to enforce
compliance with notices served to remedy sanitary defects, etc.
Magistrate's orders to carry out the works and to pay costs were
obtained in seven cases; one case was adjourned and complied
with afterwards; another withdrawn; and a fine of £5 was
inflicted in a further case. Two cases were taken for penalties
for illegal occupation of underground rooms, in one a fine of 10s.
was inflicted, and in the other the case was dismissed for want of
sufficient direct evidence, but the defendant's application for
costs was refused.
One summons was taken out under the Housing of the
Working Classes Act, and a closing order obtained.
Houses closed as unfit for human habitation:—
King's Head-court 3 houses.
The foregoing is a report of Inspector Ashdown's work up to
January 20th, 1892, and since then of my own.
