Vestry for these purposes, and on the 25th March the
Vestry embarked in the work of cleansing and watering
the streets and of 'dusting' the parish with their own
staff, horses, and plant.

The Churchwardens and Overseers for the time being, in
whom the charge of the Town Hall and Parochial Offices is
vested by express statutory authority, have continued the
management of the parochial buildings during the past
year, assisted, as hitherto, by four members of the Vestry
who have previously served either or both of the offices.
The cost of the maintenance of the Town Hall is met by
the income derived from the lettings, and any unexpended
balance at the end of the year is paid to the credit of the
Poor Rate. This year the balance amounted to £208 5s. 4d.
A statement of the receipts and expenditure for the year
1890-1, as certified by the Local Government Board District
Auditor, is incorporated as an Appendix No. 13.

The changes which have taken place in the office
staff during the year have only affected the junior
portion. W. H. Terry was appointed junior clerk at
the commencement of the year and resigned after being
nearly eight months in the Vestry's office, on his appointment
as assistant accounts clerk in the surveyor's department
of the Vestry of Battersea. J. T. W. Clarke was
appointed in his stead. Another vacancy was caused two
months afterwards by the resignation of G W. Small,
junior clerk, in whose place the Vestry appointed H. H. F.
Butler. These appointments were made by ballot after
advertisement.

Owing to the increased expenditure of the London
County Council (for which that body did not fail to
