Maternity and Child Welfare
Borough of Wandsworth War Memorial Maternity Home.
The Maternity Home which is situated in Grove Road, Balham.
adjoining the Weir Hospital, was erected by the Council in place
of the previous Home at Park Hill, Upper Tooting, which has
been demolished. The new Home was opened on the 1st October,
1931. It provides accommodation for 20 patients, with two
isolation beds. The Staff consists of a Resident Medical Officer,
two Sisters, ten Nurses and nine domestics. The nursing and
domestic staff are under the supervision of the Matron of the
Weir Hospital, and the administrative work of the Home is carried
out by the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Hospital.
Arrangements have been made with the Weir Hospital, which
adjoins the Home, to manage it on behalf of the Borough Council.
The Home is well equipped and includes all the latest requirements
for an institution of this nature.
Applicants for admission to the Maternity Home are required
to pay a fee for their confinement and are expected to remain
in the Home for 14 days. A scale of fees has been approved by
the Council and the assessment made varies with the income of
the family.
Between the opening of the Home in October and the end
of the year 32 patients were admitted for confinement. 31 of
these cases were delivered. Two maternal deaths occurred, one
being a case of Eclampsia who died undelivered shortly after
admission. The other death was due to Pulmonary Embolism.
One case of still-birth occurred and two infants died shortly after
birth.
