in consequence of which much of the lard was damaged through repeated
handling.
As a result of my action, the Trade representative from the Hungarian
Legation called to inspect a consignment, and immediately took steps
to remedy the cause for complaint.
The lard now arrives properly boxed.
Fillets of Beef.
In my report of last year I drew attention to the effect that this
meat was difficult to identify as a definite part of a carcase.
471 bags were received during the period under review, and steps
were taken by the importers to comply with the regulations in future.
Pears.
1,078 boxes of pears from South America were found on arrival
to be affected with the Mediterranean fruit-fly, Cerapitis Capitata, and
were destroyed.
Rabbits.
(a) A large number of Australian rabbits were found to be in a
rancid condition. They were packed in cardboard containers, which
were unsatisfactory and were no doubt the cause of their condition.
(b) 500 crates of New Zealand rabbits were found to be unsound,
and considering their condition, it would appear that they were probably
unsound before freezing.
Fruit Juice.
Considerable quantities of Orange and Grape Fruit Juice arrived
from South America.
Samples are taken from time to time, under the Preservatives in
Food Regulations.
Gas Storage of Apples.
Chambers for the storage of apples in carbon dioxide have been
installed at one wharf, and are working satisfactorily.
