Borough of Southwark.
Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Walworth Road, S.E.17.
To His Worship the Mayor, Aldermen and, Councillors.
Sir, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have pleasure in submitting my Annual Report for the year
ending 1935.
The year has been one of progress and extreme activity. Soon after
coming into power the present Council decided to increase the activities
of the Health Department in all its branches.
The Maternity and Child Welfare Scheme was enlarged and provision
was made for: —
(1) Maternity beds at the L.C.C. Lambeth Hospital.
(2) "Home Helps" scheme was revised.
(3) Convalescent treatment for mothers following confinement.
(4) Specialists to assist medical men in difficult cases of confinement.
(5) Maternity nurses for those unable to afford both doctor and a
nurse.
(6) Home nursing arrangements for children under five years
suffering from pneumonia, bronchitis, whooping cough,
measles, diarrhoea, etc.
Provision was also made for the building of new maternity centres
in suitable districts to replace the present hired halls, one of which—
Villa Street—is at present in course of construction. By this means
the scope of the work performed at the present centres will be able to be
considerably augmented.
The Tuberculosis Service was increased by the appointment of a
part-time assistant tuberculosis officer.
A dental service was commenced at the dispensary.
