POPULATION.
At the end of the year 1930, the Registrar-General intimated that in
computing his estimate of population for mid-year, 1930, he intended to
take into account the populations as ascertained by the 1931 Census.
At the present time (February, 1932) the enumerated population is
not to hand, but the Registrar-General has sent me an "estimated
resident" population for mid-year, 1931, which is 172,900.
This is no doubt very near to the Census figure, and the rates in my
report have been calculated on this number.
It will be seen by the Table hereunder that the population of the
Borough has been steadily decreasing, which may be accounted for by the
various clearance schemes undertaken during the last few years, in which
dislodged persons have been accommodated on estates outside Southwark.
The Census returns will no doubt show that the diminution in the
number of inhabitants has not been uniform throughout the Borough,
but that the northern end or riverside districts will have suffered most in
this respect. This is accounted for by the fact that this portion of the
Borough is becoming more commercialised each year.
The population of the several divisions of the Borough at each
Census since 1851, and also the estimated population for 1922, 1923, 1924,
1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930 and 1931 are as follows:—
