81 summonses were taken out during the year 1907, in respect to
offences, particulars of which are set out below. The following table
shows the number of summonses taken out in each of the several wards:—

These summonses had reference to the following:—
Ordinary Nuisances 59
Smoke Nuisances 8
Unsound Food 10
Failing to send list of Outworkers 1
Selling Ice Cream from barrow upon which the name
and address of the vendor was not exhibited 1
Insufficient water closet accommodation 1
No water closet accommodation (workshop) 1
Total 81
Of these 81 summonses 47 were withdrawn, as follows In 43
cases, the nuisances complained of were abated, in 2 cases a co-defendant
accepted full responsibility, and in one case a co-defendant was convicted.
One summons was withdrawn at the suggestion of the Magistrate. Of
the remaining 34 summonses Magistrates' orders were made in 2 cases
with penalties and without penalties in 6. Fines were inflicted in 23
cases. No conviction was obtained in one case. Two summonses were
dismissed, in one instance on the grounds that the Council's evidence
was too weak, and in the other the defendant pleaded "sale conditions."
