To show the character of the work done, a few cases are given
in detail as follows :
WEYMOUTH MEWS.—
This place was unpaved and defectively drained. The
nuisance arising from these conditions was much aggravated by
the want of a public urinal. This occasioned considerable
difficulty. The only possible position for a urinal being on land
belonging to St. Thomas's Hospital which is leased to the tenant
of 191, Hackney Road. This being represented to the Vestry, I
was authorized to communicate with the Hospital Authorities,
and the leaseholder, with a view to the erection by the Vestry
of a public urinal on the land in question. After much negotiation
all opposition was withdrawn, an agreement to pay 2/6 a
year signed, and a urinal erected.
The roadway of the Mews has also (under the Vestry's order)
been paved with granite cubes and properly drained by the
leaseholders of the property abutting thereon. These works
have abated a long standing nuisance.
