DISORDERLY HOUSES.
Although I have issued warnings to several persons complained of
for keeping improper houses, which for the most part have had effect,
I have not found it necessary during the past year to take proceedings
against any persons for keeping brothels; but by the authority of the
Paving Committee, I did proceed against a person who hired a piece of
ground and established a show with music and dancing, to the annoyance
of the neighbours and the obstruction of the public. The warning
was disregarded, and proceedings were taken under the 25 Geo. II.,
cap. 29, and a conviction obtained. No punishment was prayed as
the nuisance was immediately discontinued.
SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS ACT.
Appended are the reports of Dr. Stevenson, Analyst. During the
time that the present Act was proceeding through Parliament no
samples were submitted. The Act commenced from Michaelmas last.
Two convictions were obtained for selling milk reduced by water, and
one for butter adulterated by other fat. Except as to milk, the Act
seems to have practically driven adulterated articles out of the market.
THE TOWN HALL.
During the year the Large Hall has been let 172 times the
Council Chamber 5 times; the Committee Rooms have been frequently
used by Local Societies, mostly free of charge.
The receipts for letting were £1,003 5s. 6d.
