REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1907.
To the Worshipful the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of Islington.
Gentlemen,
It is my pleasing duty to submit for your consideration my report on the
health and sanitary condition of your Borough for the year 1907, during which
period I am glad to be able to state its inhabitants enjoyed very good health,
the death-rate being as low as 14.6 per 1,000, and that this is the third year
in succession that it has been below 15.0. The mortality among infants,
it is very satisfactory to note, was also low; indeed the rate (117 per 1,000
births) is the lowest of which there is any record. This small mortality was,
however, entirely due to the very favourable meteorological conditions that prevailed
during the year, especially during its third qnarter.
I am sorry I cannot congratulate the Borough on its birth-rate, 24.58 per
1,000 of its inhabitants, which is the lowest hitherto chronicled in Islington.
In conclusion I desire to thank the Public Health Committee for their
kindly consideration and assistance, and also the staff of the Public Health
Department for their ungrudging help in carrying out the very onerous work of
the department. To Mr. J. R. Leggatt, the Superintendent and Chief Sanitary
Inspector, I desire to express my indebtedness for his hearty co-operation ; and
to Mr. King, the Chief Clerk, I would convey my thanks for his valuable
assistance in preparing the several reports which from time to time have been
printed and laid before you.
I am,
Your faithful servant,
Medical Officer of Health.
