INFANTILE MORTALITY.
During 1907, the most favourable year within the recollection of the
present generation, no less than 996 deaths of infants were registered from
various causes. These deaths were in the proportion of 117 to every 1,000
registered births, which numbered 8,531.
To find a return approaching this record we must go back fiftyeight
years to the middle year of the last century, 1850, when the proportion was 119
per 1,000 births. From that year up to 1894, when the rate was 127 per
1,000 births, it was never below 130, while occasionally it was much higher, as
in 1866 it reached 169, and was 160 as recently as 1899. It is a noticeable
fact that the two years, 1850 and 1894, when the mortality was so low,
were succeeded in the following years by a high mortality, for in 1851 it was
151, and in 1894 it was 139, which was followed in the very next year by so
high a rate as 150; then by a rate of 136 in 1897, of 159 in 1898, of 160 in 1899,
and of 145 in 1900. Since then the mortality has fallen by easy stages to 117
in the year under consideration.
In 1907 the mortality was not equally good in all parts of the borough,
for it varied from 88 per 1,000 births in Upper Holloway to 148 per 1,000
births in Lower Holloway.

These figures are not pleasant reading as regards some of the districts,
for they indicate a far too high percentage of deaths in Barnsbury, Tufnell,
Tollington and Lower Holloway.
