Illegitimate Births.—The returns show that 230 illegitimate births were
registered in the borough during the year, or 14 less than in the preceding
year, but 3 in excess of the return for 1905. These births were in the proportion
of 0.66 per 1,000 inhabitants. There has been a steady, if slow, decline in
illegitimate births for over twenty-seven years. Thus during the years 1881-90
they averaged 348 per annum, in the decennium 1891-1900 272, and during
the last seven years 241.
The following statement gives for comparative purposes the birth-rate for
the country as well as for some of the most populous places—
England and Wales 26.3 per thousand living.
