Cowsheds.—These have been further reduced from 9 to 7, at the last Licensing
Session of the London County Council, by one situate at And over Road, and another at
Hale Street, Arlington Square, being allowed to lapse owing to disuse, and the number of
cows kept in the remainder has been still further decreased during the year, so that it would
appear that cowkeeping in London will soon be a thing of the past.
In two instances, in the same cowshed, your Inspector had to complain of the
dirty condition of certain cows; but it is only fair to state that in each case they
had been newly purchased, whilst the foul condition of their butts and flanks was of old
standing, and due to their previous insanitary surroundings in some rural district, and
as such cases are the rule, and not the exception, this in itself is proof of the assertion
often made, that the cattle of our rural districts are not kept in a manner calculated to
ensure the purity of the milk supply.
One case of abnormal condition of the udder was reported to the Medical Officer
of Health of the London County Council, and received the attention of their Veterinary
Inspector. A total of 107 visits have been made, and the regulations, with certain minor
exceptions, have been fairly well observed.
Offensive Trade Establishments.—These comprise 3 tripe boilers, 2 gut scrapers,
1 tallow melter, and 1 knacker's yard. They have received 118 visits, which proved fairly
satisfactory, and no outside complaint has been received concerning their conduct.
