Sanitary Improvements.—During the year I have served 282 notices for the abatement of
nuisances, 335 workshops have been cleansed and limewhited. Thirty-three w.c.'s have been
provided (21 for males and 12 for females) at various factories and workshops, whilst 496
other improvements were carried out under my supervision.
Bakehouses.—I have paid 621 visits to bakehouses, and it is very pleasing to state
that they are being kept in much better condition than in the past, although in a few cases,
where lineu has been hung up to dry in the bakehouse, 1 have reported to you and caused
letters to be sent remonstrating with the occupiers for doing so. I may also mention that
out of a total of 256, 209 are in use, 12 temporarily empty, and 35 underground bakehouses
not used, although they have to be visited to see that there is no infringement of the Act
relating to them.
1 have also reported through you to H.M. Inspector of Factories, as required by
Section 27 of the Public Health Act, 1891, the addresses of 68 workshops where young
persons under the age of 18 years were employed, and where the abstract of the Factory
Act was not affixed.
Register.—During the year 160 workshops, containing 292 workrooms, have been
measured and added to the Register, whilst 141 workshops, containing 242 workrooms, have
been removed, thus making a total of 855 workshops, containing 1,272 workrooms and 43
outworkers' premises on the register.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
GEORGE WEST,
Sanitary Inspector of Workshops, &c.
